Serving the Garifuna culture in Livingston
Kevin Utrilla grew up in Puerto Barrios, Izabal, in a non-Christian family. I knew that God existed but I did not know of the great things he had done and could do in each and every one of us. I came to know Jesus in 2008. I converted to being a Christian, but in reality I did not understand what it meant to serve God. To me, being a Christian just meant going to the church’s Sunday services and weekly bible studies.
In 2011 I started studying social work in college. One day a girl came up to me and said “I want to invite you to be a part of a Christian education program for kids.” At that time I did not have my love for children. I declined her invitation twice, but ‘the third time’s the charm.’ I had no clue what was waiting for me. When we arrived, it was a gorgeous place. It was Misión El Faro. That day a strange thing happened, my love for children started to grow and soon I was waiting for Sunday to go serve in the Club Exploradores (the children’s Bible club). In 2012 they invited me to be a part of the tutoring ministry at El Faro. And in November they proposed that I start working with José Gabriel, a 4-year-old boy with autism. He is the son of the administrators of El Faro. This young child taught me so many things, like how to have a passion to help other children improve their social and intellectual development.
God gave me a big heart for children. I have worked with kids from the Q’eqchi culture and now God is taking me to work with kids from the Garifuna culture in Livingston, Izabal. Now I am starting a children’s ministry, with a project focusing on creating a tutoring center for literacy and writing, for the children of this area of the country. I would also like to help the teachers in the various villages of this area that help with the education and training of the younger population.
My principal objective is that the kids, more than learning to read and write, will learn the love of God and accept Jesus into their hearts.
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Proverbs 22:6 (ESV)
