Pastor’s in Guatemala City
Miguel & Laura have been married since June 28, 2008. Laura is from the ethnic group Maya K’iche’ of Guatemala. She was born on April 2, 1980 in the city of Totonicapán that is 4 hours west of the capital of Guatemala. Laura speaks K’iche’ language and Spanish language. Miguel was born on January 24, 1981 in the capital of Guatemala and speaks Spanish. Both are currently learning the English language.
Since their marriage, Miguel & Laura moved to their home in the capital of Guatemala where Laura worked in government in the Ministry of Education of Guatemala and Miguel worked in electrical engineering company. They attended his church in the south of the city until, in 2010, accepted the call to be missionaries. Making disciples of ethnic groups was their passion from the beginning. Their denomination (Church of God) was looking to send a missionary family to the Garifuna ethnic group in the town of Livingston, Guatemala. Laura and Miguel accepted the challenge of being sent to those people. They have now been serving as missionaries in Livingston since August 2012.
They have two objectives: 1) Formally organize a church with Garifuna leaders. 2) Launch a medical clinic. The Garifuna church is attended by some 40 adults, 30 of them are baptized in water. Also there is kids club with some 60 children under 14 years old. There is a group of 20 young people each week. Laura and Miguel are currently training the new Garifuna church leaders until they teach, preach and make disciples in their own language and their own people. Livingston is the only town in Guatemala where the Garifuna ethnic group lives, there are currently about 5,000 people and most of them are practicing ancient religions (animist). But there is hope. The Garifuna church sings praises in Spanish and in the Garifuna language, the Bible also teaches in 5 groups of cells, and they are making disciples of Christ. Thank God.
In the last three years, the medical clinic in Livingston has had a doctor once a month, about 60 people attending each day of care. In addition there have been about 3 large medical trips each year with many people attending. In this way we show God’s love to people who are sick in Livingston. Laura and Miguel expect this church to have Garifuna leaders and a Garifuna pastor. In addition to treating people every day with missionary doctors and missionary nurses, the medical clinic will educate people to prevent pregnancies in girls younger than 18 years old, prevent diseases, one day even deliver babies.
