Rich & Cherry Smith
Sharing the Gospel of Christ with the people of Guatemala.
Sometime in 2013, Rich and Cherry began to sense the Lord was preparing them for some type of big change, but they had no idea what type of change was on the horizon. In May of 2015, while preparing for a mission trip to Nicaragua with 70 of the high school youth, a family friend who works for a mission agency blindsided them with one simple question – “Have you ever considered second-career missions?” After much prayer and discussion, it became abundantly clear during the course of the next year that this is precisely what the Lord was calling them to pursue.
They were appointed as missionaries to Latin America by their home (sending) church, West Bridge Church, in Danville, IN. in September, 2016. They are targeting an August 2017 departure (Lord willing) to Guatemala to begin a year-long intensive Spanish language training. Once completed, they are excited to begin work in pastoral training, discipleship, and youth work.
The Lord has placed a love their hearts for the people of Latin America, along with a desire to share the Gospel of Christ with that people group. There are so many opportunities to come along side that people group and share truth with them…so many needs…and so few willing to go.
Until they leave for language school, they are focused on preparing for the field. This preparation includes: Bible study, prayer, book studies, completing various training requirements; ministering/serving in various capacities within the church; and identifying individuals and churches interested in partnering with them via prayer and financial support; and studying Latin American culture.
Rich and Cherry were high school sweethearts who have been blessed with two exceptional daughters and their amazing husbands. Rich and Cherry met in youth group at Washington Heights Church in Kettering, OH. They were married by their youth pastor in that church in 1987, while attending Cedarville University. After graduation, they lived 3 years in Columbus, OH and 7 years in Des Moines, IA where Rich worked in the Financial Services industry. During this time, they served in various church ministries at Valley Evangelical Free Church (West Des Moines, IA), including: prayer, music, nursery and elementary youth, as well as high school youth.
They moved to Indianapolis, IN in 1999 when Rich changed employers in order to be closer to family. There, Rich worked as an insurance executive and Cherry worked in a number of roles within local Christian schools. Again, they made serving in the church a priority, ministering in a number of capacities (music, prayer, elementary youth, high school youth, small group studies, etc.). In 2012, they began attending West Bridge church in Danville, IN. They promptly began serving as youth sponsors in the vibrant and growing high school program. After serving in this capacity, they were asked to also lead the college and career group. It turns out the Lord used these service opportunities as key groundwork in preparation of His calling for them to pursue full-time missions work.
Rich and Cherry head to Antigua, Guatemala in August 2017 to begin a year of full-time Spanish language school. During this year of language school, they will also work to learn Guatemalan culture, build relationships with nationals, connect with a local church, and identify opportunities to serve (Bible studies, youth discipleship, pastoral mentoring, and community outreach).
Rich and Cherry ask that you pray specifically for:
- them, as well as extended family members, as they adjust to time apart.
- perseverance as they adjust to new surroundings, culture, and language.
- opportunities to develop relationships and witness even amidst transition and language school.
- them to continue to lean on the Lord, in prayer, for their strength and guidance
